Odisha suffer innings defeat in Ranji match vs Jharkhand

Despite booking berth in the quarterfinals after a gap of 15 years, Odisha ended their Group B Ranji Trophy league campaign on a disappointing note as they suffered an innings and 93-run defeat against Jharkhand in their eighth and last match at St Xaviers College Ground in Trivandrum today.

The emphatic win fetched Jharkhand seven points and they finished at the top of the table with 39 points. On the other hand, this was the first outright defeat for Odisha, who finished third with 22 points. Karnataka occupied the second position with 37 points and qualified for the quarterfinals along with Jharkhand and Odisha. Quarterfinals will be played from December 24 to 28.

In reply to a modest first-innings total of 152 by Odisha, Jharkhand folded up for 348 after resuming at the overnight score of 236 for five. Kaushal Singh (86), captain Saurabh Tiwary (78) and Virat Singh (57) scored a half-century each for Jharkhand. Among successful Odisha bowlers, Basant Mohanty took three wickets, while Deepak Behera and Dhiraj Singh picked up a brace each.

After conceding a huge lead of 196 runs, Odisha once again put up lackluster batting performance to be dismissed for a small total of 102, losing six wickets for 19 runs. Among Odisha batsmen, Sandeep Pattnaik, Ranjit Singh, Subhranshu Senapati and Deepak Behera were able to reach double digits.

Earlier, spinners Shahbaz Nadeem and Sunny Gupta shared seven wickets between them to help Jharkhand bowl out Odisha for 152. Put into bat by Jharkhand skipper Saurabh Tiwary, Odisha started their innings on a slow and steady note with Sandeep Patnaik and Ranjit Singh putting up 46 runs for the opening wicket. But that turned out to be the best phase of their innings as wickets fell in quick intervals thereafter. From 46 for no loss, they were reduced to 48 for four, losing four wickets in space of only two runs. Captain Govind Poddar, Abhishek Yadav and Subhranshu Senapati failed to open their accounts.

Though Patnaik and Biplab Samantray steadied the innings to some extent, adding 36 runs for the fifth wicket, Odisha never fully recovered from the top order failure. They could muster a 150-plus total, thanks to 32-run stand for the last wicket between vice-captain Basant Mohanty and Dhiraj Singh.

Opener Patnaik was only Odisha batsman to show the right application with 174-ball 43, which included four boundaries. Left-arm spinner Nadeem was most successful Jharkhand bowler with four wickets for 31 runs, while off-spinner Gupta picked up three for three for 56.
